In order to satisfy the University English Competency Requirement students must do one of the following:

  1. Achieve an English subtest score of 22 or higher on the ACT (or a comparable score on the SAT I)
  2. Transfer a course equivalent to GE 140 (English Literature & Composition), or a course for which college-level English is a prerequisite
  3. Complete GE140 (English Literature & Composition)
  4. Provide another OCAD transcript indicating English competency requirement has been satisfied

Students who have not met these English language requirements must take English language placement testing at Olivet English Placement Test before the first day of classes. Based on the placement test result, a student may be required to take additional language-training.

POLICY:

All students who have not met Olivet's English language requirements upon admission must to take the English Language Placement Test and, if necessary, follow a schedule that will develop their writing abilities.

PURPOSE:

The English Placement Test evaluates the abilities of incoming students who have not demonstrated satisfactory fulfillment of Olivet's English language requirements to ensure they are ready for higher-level English language courses in the General Education Core Curriculum, starting with GE140 (English Literature & Composition).

TESTING SESSIONS:

Testing sessions occur twice per academic year, before the first day of classes of Fall and Spring semesters.

RESULTS:

All students without credit for freshman English courses will be placed in one of the following English language curriculums: 1) English Literature and Composition (GE140), followed by Research & Writing (GE150) and Speech & Communication (GE160); or 2) English Fundamentals (GE130)—a non-credit intermediary English prerequisite course to GE140, GE150, and GE160.

Students will receive a score indicating that their writing abilities correspond to one of the following levels:

Level 1: English language abilities are superior to those of the average freshman student entering GE140 (English Literature & Composition),

Level 2: English language abilities are equivalent to those of the average freshman student entering GE140 (English Literature & Composition),

Level 3: English language abilities are weaker than those of the average freshman student entering GE140 (English Literature & Composition),

Level 4: English language abilities are equivalent to those of a student entering GE130 (English Fundamentals)

Level 5: English language abilities are lower than those of a student entering GE130 (English Fundamentals)

Minimum score requirements in English proficiency are determined by degree program as follows:

Olivet College of Art and Design:

Recommendations for English language support will be included for those students whose English corresponds to Level 3. Students who meet all admission requirements but do not demonstrate an English language proficiency level at or above Level 3 may be placed on an academic probationary period for up to 90-days, and must enroll in an approved English language program as a condition of enrollment. These students can be admitted to the regular program with a satisfactory score at a retesting session (no sooner than the following semester).

NOTIFICATION OF RESULTS:

The results of the English language assessment are available through a student's Academic Advisor.
